"When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love has always won. There have been tyrants, and murderers, and for a time, they can seem invincible, but in the end they always fall. Think of it. Always."
-Mahatma Gandhi
Mahatma Gandhi
Mahatma Gandhi is a figurehead in India's political past. He started out as a lawyer, but soon became a leader of India's quest for rights and independence. At his first rally in South Africa, he and followers attempted to burn their papers, but he was horribly beaten and told to stop; however, he continued, not letting the British's acts of violence stop him from showing them that the people of India were not happy with the way things were. Although his words at the rally were not very powerful or memorable, his actions and persistance were remembered by all who were present.
After the rally, Gandhi called on Indians overywhere to protest against the unfair laws against them, but without violence. He knew that if they used violence, the British would have even more reason to punish them and deny them their rights. Although Gandhi and others did nothing to harm the British, they were greatly punished. Gandhi was faced with terrible adversity, but he never gave up no matter how often he was beat, arrested, or slandered. This shows that he truly lived accordingly to the above quote.
After the British finally allowed India its independence, there was still much division and hardship amongst the Indian people. Although there was so much tension present, Gandhi continued to exhibit great love and desire for peace as it says in his quote above. Even after his assasination on January 30, 1948, the people united to recognize the passing of the wonderful man who never gave up believing that if he kept on striving for good, good would come. Mahatma Gandhi truly lived by his words by believing in the eventual victory of peace and encouraging others to do the same.
